Although they're not a sponsor, I wanted to give a big thanks to Adventure Tool Company. I love the care and thoughtfulness that small business' put into not only their products, but their customer service as well. Coolest tool kit I've found for my bike and it's made in the USA! - Terry

Sponsor Onboard - Leatherman Tools

Hello everyone, I came home to awesome news this evening, my neighbor who works at Leatherman in Portland surprised me/us with a sponsorship from Leatherman.  Obviously, Leatherman needs no introduction - only that they invented the multi-tool and make the best multi-tools, lights, and other gadgets on the market! The three of us are actively researching their entire product lineup trying to decide which tools will best suit our needs for the upcoming adventure.  Rest assured, we'll all be packing a multi-tool for roadside repairs and headlamps from LED Lenser for nighttime quick fixes or for trying to find our way through the forest while running from bears!

We're very excited to have Leatherman onboard with us and appreciate how much they believe in our adventure.

A special thanks to Phil for making the arrangements!

Kris' Add-Ons

Kris came over this evening to show me all the new additions to Redbone. Pretty impressive if you ask me. He's promised he has pictures and details of all his work that will be posted when I actually receive them. So...this pic is just a sneak peak.

He also bought a new sport monocle!  He lost his last after last year's Sasquatch rally. I keep telling him he looks like Mr. Peanut or the Monopoly Guy!

Sun-Day Fun-Day

The three of us got out of the house yesterday for nice long rides in the sun.  Both Oregon and Washington broke temperature records yesterday for what we are referring to as "June-uary." Temperatures were in the low 70's!  Terry was able to go riding with another buddy of ours who also lives in Seattle.  Kris and I tried to get Terry to make the long-haul to Portland to ride with us to the Oregon coast but he declined and opted not to sit on his bike for 6+ additional hours transiting from Seattle...what a wuss!  Just kidding, I don't blame him one bit.

Instead, Terry and our other buddy Kent (blue F800GS below) rode one of Seattle's ferries across the Puget Sound and then home around the peninsula.  They reported having a great time with the exception of a little electric maintenance required on Terry's trusty "Excalibur."  Terry said it was an easy fix and only required tightening the battery terminal bolts loose from one of his recent Battery Tender extension upgrade.  Phew...!!!

Kris and I managed to get out of Portland at 10:45 hoping the fog would subside...it didn't!  We decided to go anyway and once we gained some elevation West of Portland we broke out of the fog to enjoy the sun!  It was a most excellent day!  We visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory and bought some cheese curds for next weekends Superbowl (GO HAWKS!).  They go excellent with chips and beer...but really, anything goes excellent with chips and beer!

After Tillamook, we headed South to a secret beach I found a few years ago.  I took a cruise down the one-mile stretch of unpopulated beach and tested out my Heidenau K60 Scout tires in the sand, they worked perfectly!  Kris is still riding on his factory slicks so he wasn't able to have any sand-play.  That was the first time I've ridden the BMW in the sand and I was pleased at how well it did.  Not as good as my old WR450F...but better than expected.

After the beach, Kris and I headed to Pacific City for tacos and a beer.  Pacific City was packed with people.  It seemed everyone in Portland had the same idea we had on a nice warm June-uary day...head to the beach!

After Pacific City, Kris and I rode home the same way we came and clocked a total of 245 miles!  WHAT A GREAT DAY!

Till the next post...

Sponsor Onboard - Touratech USA

It was a GREAT day when we received notification from Touratech-USA they would be sponsoring us during our ride to the Arctic! What was equally exciting was to hear how excited they were that we are riding to the Arctic Ocean instead of South America...which in their words was "where everyone else was going."  It means a lot to know they believe in our trip and that we'll have their support for the three week adventure!

Anyone who knows anything about adventure motorcycling knows the name Touratech, their name truly speaks for itself.  They are pioneers in the industry and make arguably some of the best equipment for adventure motorcycles.  Our bikes already sport a plethora of their products and now that we have their support we'll be bolting on even more upgrades and putting them to the test in the Great White North!

USA headquartered in Seattle, please check out their website www.touratech-usa.com to browse their product line and/or to thank them for supporting us!

ArcticMotoAdv is thrilled to be waving the Touratech-USA flag all the way to the Arctic Ocean!

Thanks Touratech, we appreciate your support!

Sponsor Onboard - Black Dog Cycle Works

To say Black Dog Cycle Works www.blackdogcw.com is one of the most innovative motorcycle equipment manufactures in the industry would be putting in mildly.  They truly are the ULTIMATE in adventure motorcycle armor, upgrades and accessories!

Terry has been using their products for several years and swears by their quality, durability and customer service. Specifically, Terry installed a set of their Platform Footpads on his KTM 990 and says they really help with control and comfort while standing on the pegs for hours during off-pavement rides.

ArcticMotoAdv is happy to announce they will be sponsoring us during our Arctic ride this summer and we couldn't be happier.  As mentioned, Terry already has some of their bolt-ons installed on his KTM while Kris and I will be looking to add upgrades to our bikes in the very near future!

Thanks Black Dog Cycle Works, we appreciate your support!

Sponsor Onboard - Cyclops Adventure Sports

Another major sponsor contacted us to offer their support. Cyclops Adventure Sports manufactures some of the best lighting systems you can buy.  They not only manufacture lighting for adventure motorcycles but they make systems for off-road vehicles, snow mobiles, bicycles, marine and commercial applications and pretty much anything else in-between.  We're excited they contacted us for sponsorship and we're excited to try out some of their new lights during our summer adventure!

Please take a moment to check out their website and show them some love www.cyclopsadventuresports.com

The graphic below demonstrates how you can increase your visibility by simply replacing your stock headlight bulb with one of their LED bulbs.

Thanks Cyclops, we really appreciate your support!

The Three Amigos Ride Again

Terry and I previously mentioned we took a week-long ADV trip through the back-roads of Washington State from British Columbia to Oregon, properly named the Sasquatch Rally!  What wasn't clear was that we did this trip with another friend of ours, Kris, who rode his trusty Suzuki DR400Z.  Kris has not been mentioned on this blog because he took forever to actually pull the trigger and commit to going to the Arctic with us.  Something about work, family, and several other excuses...but I digress.

MOTIVATED TO RIDE:  It must have been killing Kris to view our blog and see he wasn't mentioned; because today he surprised us with a text message saying he bought a brand new 2014 Suzuki V-Strom 650 (see pics below) and will be riding North to the Arctic with us!

Way to go Kris, welcome aboard; we're happy you found the "courage" to join us!  It will be nice to have the "Sport Monocle" rejoin the group...otherwise known as "Mr. Peanut" or the "Monopoly Guy!"

Enjoy the pictures below of Kris and his new horse (aka Redbone)...along with a few pictures from last year's Sasquatch Rally.

Terry's "Excalibur" receives some bolt-on's

Today brought two mod’s to “Excalibur”, and both of them brought to you by way of Touratech’s online store.  The first aftermarket install was to protect the headlight from flying gravel and hitting helicopter sized mosquitos.  While the second modification was an attempt at fortifying the rear brake reservoir, which is housed in an area where I’m sure to smash it off in a right side emergency dismount.  Although I love my KTM, “Race Ready” must mean “missing any useable guards” because I’ve felt the need to replace all of them plus add more on both of my KTM’s.

Both parts are Touratech and were honestly SUPER easy to put on (that’s like easy, but with a cape).  The Brake Cylinder Guard took less than five minutes to put on.  It included two spacers, the guard itself and a bolt.

The second install was the addition of Touratech’s Clear Makrolon Headlight Guard.  This install took a little bit longer, but truly not much longer.  I was afraid however, that things weren’t going to line up.  And if you hold the brackets up against the preexisting holes in the windscreen it doesn’t line up, but don’t fret.  During the installation I was EXTREMELY tempted to bend the brackets to where I thought it would line up. DON’T DO THAT!!  Once everything was put together it lined up like a champ and popped right into place. Pop!

This evening I also got the opportunity to try out one of my Christmas presents from my amazing wife.  She gave me a Brunton Pulse 1500, which retails around 30 bucks.  Since I have more phones than a drug dealer sometimes, my wife thought it appropriate to get me a small yet useful backup battery charger.  Tonight, I let my iPhone 5S go dead.  How dead?  Dead, dead.  I plugged my iPhone charging cable into the slick, hidden USB port and wallah!  Charging.  The one downer of the Brunton Pulse 1500 is that it doesn’t come with instructions and Brunton doesn’t provided instructions online either, which drove my father-in-law absolutely bonkers (as he got one in his stocking too).  The lack of instructions wouldn’t be so problematic as the device is rather simple to use except the USB plug for charging doesn’t look like a traditional USB plug.  It’s a USB plug without the metal housing around it.  It sounds obvious, but it wasn’t for me, at least not immediately.  Also, the device does not come with a power block to plug into the wall.  Thankfully, we have as many Apple products as we have dishes at our house, so stealing an extra power block was easy.  Although the device didn’t fully charge my iPhone, it easily brought it back to life at around 65%.

More Upgrades...

Today brought several more upgrades in addition to the aforementioned throttle lock.  I purchased a new GPS mount and installed it today.  When Terry and I did the Sasquatch Rally last year Touratech did not offer a GPS mount for the new F800GSA that installs above the instrument cluster.  They have since remedied that problem and recently released one.  You can see in the picture below I left the older mount installed...I may put something on that as well.

I installed the tank bag my wife bought me for Christmas.  It's waterproof and will hold those items that need to be readily available during the ride (camera, wallet, phone,
Terry's KTM fuel dip-stick).

Kaoko Cruise Control / Throttle Lock

I installed a Kaoko cruise control (throttle lock) today. This should help with the long stretches of road. It took about five minutes to put on, I wish all upgrades were this easy!

Jetboil Cooking System

Purchased a Jetboil cooking system today (Terry already has one).  I bought the Flash model in carbon (black) color. Terry says I won't be able to find it in the dark but I reminded him it will be light outside most of the day in the far North...he's had a rough day!

Tried it out for dinner using a Mountain House freeze dried spaghetti with meat sauce pack. The Jetboil boiled two cups in under two minutes...very impressive!

The Mountain House dinner was excellent. Those will be the go-to dinner and lunch packs for our big trip.

148 days to go!
